Functional Leg Length Remediation — Jerry Gerlich

Forward by Steve Hogg

I have a friend in Austin, Texas named Jerry Gerlich. Jerry works at Castle Hill Fitness as a personal trainer, bike fitter and rehab guy. Jerry is smart and thoughtful. Thoughtful in the sense that he is a thinker. Below are 4 pics of one of Jerry’s clients who originally presented with a functional leg length difference resulting from caesarean-section and cancer related surgeries. I’ll let Jerry speak for what happened subsequently:

” The first and third shot is the improvement we gained in her first session.  After 6-7 weeks of some challenging core, breathing, modified inversions, whole body vibration and some not-so-fun fascia work, we did another session with photos.  The first and third photos show improvement but nothing near the second and fourth”

LEG LENGTH 1: Start of initial session before warm up

LEG LENGTH 2: Start of session following several weeks of remedial activities

LEG LENGTH 3: End of first session

LEG LENGTH 4: End of session following weeks of remedial activities

The pics above show what is possible when a client with a functional issue gets the right advice and is prepared to do the appropriate work. Your body functions better with improved symmetry. Your nervous system rewards symmetry. Improved function reduces the need for inappropriate cleat shimming or wedging techniques. Cycling is easier, faster and safer when clients are as functionally symmetrical as possible.
